300 Series Stainless Steel Shim Stock
Stainless Steel Shims areavailable at SPIROL as a shim option which is more resistant to corrosion, staining, and rust as compared to other steels. We offer stainless shim stock in thicknesses from 0.05mm to 6mm (.002" to .250") and the following grades: 301, 302, 304, 316, 321.
Benefits of Using Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% or 11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode, or rust as easily as ordinary steel, making it an ideal choice for shims. It is also called corrosion-resistant steel or CRES when the alloy type and grade are not detailed. Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present. Stainless steels have sufficient amounts of chromium present so that a passive film of chromium oxide forms which prevents further surface corrosion and blocks corrosion from spreading into the metal's internal structure. There are over 150 grades of stainless steel.
SPIROL's standard stainless steels used for shims, washers and spacers are comprised of a variety of 300 series austenitic stainless steels. In general, austenitic stainless steels are known for their excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance in both oxygenating and non-oxygenating environments and its resistance to staining. Austenitic stainless is non-magnetic in the annealed form and can increase in magnetic permeability during cold forming. Various alloying elements within the different grades of 300SST affect their overall corrosion resistance, suitable operating temperature range, propensity to increase in magnetism, formability and welding characteristics.
Stainless Steel Grades
SPIROL stocks the following standard grades and tempers of stainless steel to manufacture shims, washers and spacers:
- 301 (Full Hard)
- 302 (Full Hard)
- 316 (Annealed)
- 321 (Annealed)
SPIROL stocks standard stainless steel in thicknesses ranging from 0.05mm to 6mm (.002" to .250") for quick turnaround of Shims, Spacers and Washers.
If a special alloy or temper of stainless steel is required for your Shim requirements, SPIROL will procure the custom material from our certified raw material suppliers.
