Carbon Steel Shims

1

SPIROL manufactures steel Shims and Spacers from an extensive array of carbon steel with thicknesses ranging from 19mm (.750") to foils as thin as 0.02mm (.001").  We also offer carbon steel Shims in laminated and edge bonded configurations to meet your specific project needs. Our carbon steel Shims are available in grades: 1008, 1010, 1018, 1075, 1095, 4130.

Benefits of Using Steel

Carbon Steel Shims

Carbon steel, also called plain carbon steel or "mild steel", is a type of steel where the main alloying constituent is carbon. The AISI definition of carbon steel is: "Steel is considered to be carbon steel when no minimum content is specified or required for chromium, cobalt, columbium, molybdenum, nickel, titanium, tungsten, vanadium or zirconium, or any other element to be added to obtain a desired alloying effect; when the specified minimum for copper does not exceed 0.40 percent; or when the maximum content specified for any of the following elements does not exceed the percentages noted: manganese 1.65, silicon 0.60, copper 0.60."  Steel with a low carbon content has properties similar to iron. As the carbon content rises, the metal becomes harder and stronger but less ductile and more difficult to weld. In general, higher carbon content lowers the melting point and its temperature resistance.  85% of all steel used in the U.S. is carbon steel.

Low carbon steel contains approximately 0.05% to 0.15% carbon and mild steel contains 0.16% to 0.29% carbon, therefore it is neither brittle nor ductile. Mild steel has a relatively low tensile strength, but it is inexpensive and malleable; and its surface hardness can be increased through carburizing.

Carbon steels grades that can successfully undergo heat treatment have a carbon content in the range of 0.30% to 1.70% by weight. High carbon steel has approximately 0.55% to 0.95% carbon content with 0.30% to 0.90% manganese content. High carbon is very strong and is commonly used for springs and high-strength wires. When hardened and tempered, typically the hardness is close to Rc 40. This product is easily formed and heat treated.

Standard Carbon Steel Grades

SPIROL stocks the following standard grades and tempers of carbon steel to manufacture Shims, Spacers and Washers:

  • 1008 Temper #4
  • 1010 Temper #1
  • 1018 Temper #4
  • 1075 Annealed
  • 1095 Annealed
  • 4130

Standard Thickness

SPIROL stocks standard carbon steel in thicknesses ranging from 0.05mm to 6mm (.002" to .250") for quick turnaround of Shims, Spacers and Washers.

Specials
